Weekend Dispatch 03
Holiday cookies, cooking for a group, outdoor museums
Hello! I am about to board the plane to Puerto Rico, but had to bust out my last weekend recap for the year!
Things were winding down for the holiday at work, so Friday I went to Glenstone. This was only my second time visiting (I think) and the first time was in the Spring, so it was really cool to see when everything was dry. The meadows were still beautiful and the mood was a little more contemplative.
Glenstone was opened by a billionaire real estate developer bro who fell for a hot young art chica (many such stories)- though they are divorcing now. You can visit by reservation only, but it’s pretty easy to slip in solo, especially on weekdays. They also do not allow photos in the galleries, which I wasn’t aware of until I was scolded.
I really enjoyed the Jenny Holzer exhibit and Alex da Corte installation.
I stopped at the cafe for lunch and had a grilled cheese and tomato soup- it really hit on a rainy day! I chatted up the couple across the table from me and they ordered the same.
The next day I had a showing in Middleburg so I drove out to horse county once again. I was on a tight schedule but I had time to grab lunch at Hunter’s Head Tavern. They served me a beef stroganoff without an ounce of green that fed me for three meals.
I wanted to stop in Middleburg town, but it was super busy and I had to go to another showing in Lorton. I did have time to stop at Stitch, a needlework shop with a stunning variety of thread. I bought some merino wool thread to fix a couple of sweaters.
In the evening, I had some friends over for a little holiday party and New Zealand wine tasting. I cooked a vegetable tagine and lemon-olive chicken. My friend Josh made incredible cookie boxes for everyone. Casey brought a bananofee pie and Amy made miso rice krispie treats. We had a “white elephant” with little gifts that I got from New Zealand- the Marmite was shockingly the most desired item.
Thank you for reading! If you are traveling for the holidays, stay safe, and remember:
